O=====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|===
15 March 1985
HI have an Apple IIe and an Imagewriter printer at home and a IIe and an F
DApple DMP at work. The Apple at work was purchased with just an 80 D
Bcolumn card. To give it 128K we purchased an Extend 80 card from H
FCaribbean Computer Sales, 221 E. Osceola, Suite 110, Stuart, Florida G
E33494. The Extend 80 card plugs into the 80 column card (ours is an I
GApple Parallel Interface card). The list price is $129.00. It took 5 I
Gminutes and works like a charm, the desktop went from 10K to 55K, just H
Flike in their ad. Then I got reckless. For my own Apple, I bought a I
G256K Ramworks card from Applied Engineering, P.O. Box 798, Carrollton, H
FTexas, 75008. I also got the software to modify Appleworks to use a K
Ilarger RAM. You can also put your RAM chips from the extended 80 column K
Icard if you have one, on the Ramworks card and have 384K available. The J
H256K costs $399.00, they also have smaller and larger cards available. J
HYou can buy a card and then buy the extra chips, up to one megabyte, if J
Hyou want more memory. The Ramworks card goes in the auxillary slot. I H
Fwould like to recommend this product for those people who are feeling H
Fcramped with a 55K desktop. I have had no problems with the card, it H
Fworks with all my programs. You can use part of the RAM as a ramdisk H
Fwith software ($29) that is available from Applied Engineering. They J
Hadvertise in A+ and they also have telephone information available (you (
pay). I don't own any of their stock.
HSomeone asked about books on Appleworks. I am aware of four books that K
Ihave been published or are about to be: Williams, Robert. The Power of G
EAppleworks. Englewood Cliffs: Prentice-Hill, l984. 228 pp. I have H
Fthis one and would not recommend it unless you also buy the disk. It I
Gcosts $19.95 without the disk and $34.95 with it. As you read through K
Ithe book, you are constantly being told "if you have purchased this book L
Jwithout the Sample Diskette, you will need to type it (the example) in." J
HSince they used different examples with every lesson, you will be doing J
Ha lot of typing in! I have not done all the lessons in the book, but I B
@found errors in some of those that I did do. It does give some H
Finformation that is not covered in the AppleWorks tutorial (but is in H
Fthe manual) and I hope it will be useful for the spreadsheet, which I K
Ihave had no experience with. The book is a straight tutorial and doesn't :
seem to present any new information or sample templates.
FTymes, Elna. Mastering Appleworks. Berkeley: Sybex, 1984. 201 pp. H
F$15.95. This one I just got and haven't had a chance to work through J
Hyet. It assumes you can do the tutorial and read the manual. There is E
Can appendix with 20 business spreadsheet models (also available on H
Fdiskette). It includes Accounts Receivable, Balance Sheet, Breakeven I
GAnalysis, Expenses, Cash Flow, etc. On the cover it says that it will E
Callow you to transform AppleWorks into a business software package F
Dand...give you the means to tailor it to your specific and changing
needs.
ILong, Douglas. Inside AppleWorks. New York: Holt, l985. $14.95. This E
Cone was just published in February. I have a copy on order but it
hasn't come yet.
DRubin, Charles. Apple Works. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1985. I
G$17.95. This one is announced for July l985. I have some hope for it H
Fbecause it is by the same author that just wrote Endless Apple, which
was very good.
GNow I have a problem for the group: has anyone a way of linking files J
Htogether when they are printed? I have a word processing document that K
Ioccupies 10 diskettes. Because of the 55K limit (before Ramworks) it is G
Ebroken into files by the letter of the alphabet. I would like to be G
Eable to print it without the printer skipping to the top of the next
form between each file.
FAlso, does anyone out there use the Vilberg Bros DMP Utilities with a J
HDMP or Imagewriter and Appleworks. Their ad sounds so interesting! If J
Hit sounds like I'm a collector of books, hardware and software, you are
right.
HGood luck with the Group and when are you going to put it on the Source H
Fso I don't have to mail stuff to you? I have disk 1 and 2 from you. I
GYou can send me 3 & 4 when you get them. I don't have anything useful F
Din templates for you, but just in case you are a Star Trek fan, I'm 3
including my Star Trek episode data base for you!
